Why Hair Is So Important To Many Jewish Women

curly jewish hair

It is more accurate and polite to refer to curly hair simply as such, while the long untrimmed curls worn by some Jews should get referred to as payots. When you are blessed with the right curls, just tossing your hair around a little in the morning can create the illusion that you spent time and energy creating the perfect behead look. It's perfect for a busy day of running errands, or a entertaining night out. If you think there's not much to do with short curly hair, you're missing out on the world of hair accessories—with the exception of the half bun hairstyle.

Ways to Manage Your Jewish Curls This Summer

Ask your stylist to keep hair a little longer at the neck to avoid a shape that is too round. Jewfro hairstyles come in lots of different sizes and styles which depend on the natural hair type of the wearer. When I moved to Israel, being surrounded by men and women sporting curly hair was just one of the unexpected benefits of living in the Holy Land. Now I am back in the Diaspora I encourage others to embrace their natural hair.

#8: Parted ‘fro

On any given head, there may even be multiple different curl patterns. Regardless of whether you have tiny kinks and coils, thick ringlets, s-curls, or big loops, you should feel free to wear them in their natural, unmanipulated state if that's what you prefer. A mane marked by a mass of curls may rule out certain cuts and styles, but thankfully the lob is not among them. This trendy hairstyle suits just about anyone, including girls with curls. With the help of a few face-framing layers, the cut can also flatter just about any face shape.

#19: Teased Jewfro

Seeing this online community support these women in this transition I decided to give a shout out to my community to embrace their curls too. And hair discrimination is not limited to the workplace; heartbreaking stories were cropping up in schools, too. Students were being told they can’t participate in school sports, go to prom, walk in graduation, or even start the school year with their peers because of their hair.

Swoop and pin the braid to the back of the head, and repeat on other side if desired. While hair is still damp, apply a generous amount of the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle CURVE IT Elastic Curl Mousse. Scrunch hair gently to soften and tame curls from roots to ends. Use the L’Oréal Paris Elvive Extraordinary Oil Curls Shampoo and the L’Oréal Paris Elvive Extraordinary Oil Curls Conditioner.

For example, I never feared being suspended from school or losing a job because of my hair texture. Nonetheless, when I was young, I spent so much time, energy, and money to conform — and then, when I chose not to, I felt like I needed to explain my decision to keep my hair in its natural state. But the natural hair movement — which has been bolstered considerably in recent years, on platforms like YouTube and Instagram —  has helped empower me to celebrate my curly texture again. Jewish people may also curl their payots to achieve a certain aesthetic.

This feathered take on the lob includes wispy layers that are perfect for showing off loose waves. If your hair is more wavy than curly, this is still an option worth considering—especially if your hair is on the thinner side. Curly-hair can be thin, too, and a feathered lob might be just the right cut to add a boost of volume. You can’t go wrong with a ‘do that’s not too short yet not too long.

How To Make Your Jewfro Look Good

Meanwhile, as a Jewish presidential candidate who doesn’t “downplay” her Jewish identity, Sheinbaum must contend with commentators like Fox who assert that being Jewish and Mexican is a logical impossibility. And when Sheinbaum wears traditional Mexican huipiles and briefly dons a Catholic rosary at a campaign event, she is a deemed a “liar.” Every course of action gets her censured. At the event, Sheinbaum also briefly donned a rosary that someone had spontaneously handed to her. There is instant style that comes with a tight high ponytail accented with a thick silky bow. Gather your curls into a high, sleek bun and secure—simple as that. Quench your curls while you wash using the L’Oréal Paris EverCurl HydraCharge Shampoo and the L’Oréal Paris EverCurl HydraCharge Conditioner.

Do all Jewish people have curly hair?

Inspired by my daughter, 13 years after I chopped off my own curls, I’m growing them out again. And these are the lessons I hope we can all instill in our children, one ringlet at a time. Shoulder-length haircuts look great with curly texture—whether its larger, loose wavy hair, medium-sized springy curls, or smaller ringlets. Plus, a layered medium curly hairstyle will retain some length, build volume, and amplify the texture of your curls. The shag was immensely popular in the 70s and it has made a colossal comeback. Folks with all hair textures can rock this style, but it's curly hair that is basically the perfect hair type for a shag.

And while I am happy to advocate for curl power I have a new challenge, accepting the stray grey strands of hair that are beginning to pepper my head. So far I am not so sanguine about this phenomenon, but hope with time I will learn to also embrace this change. This idea of fitting in with our perception of how society thinks we should look is certainly not limited to curly hair. Unfortunately the manufacturers of skin lightening cream have long benefited as well as plastic surgeons who routinely reshape Asian eyes to look bigger and more Caucasian, to mention just a few damaging trends.

When the curly hair gods smile on us and allow that definition to pop, it's truly amazing. Invest in some stylish accent pieces to transform your curly hair whenever you want, no styling necessary. One of the best things about curly hair is that you can do fun things that are simpler than they look and revel in how deceivingly intricate it looks. This style involves tying a scarf onto one of the three pieces of hair that you are French braiding, and then wrapping it all into a low bun. If traditional, romantic layers aren’t your thing, go for a more dramatic look.

The answer to that question is less straightforward than you may think. To maintain the dimension of your longer curls, layers are almost always a good idea. Layers of the swoopy variety provide instant volume and look particularly fabulous on those with looser curls. Before hair dries completely, work a bit of mousse through your shaggy strands.

The 21 Best Haircuts and Hairstyles for Curly Hair

I recently joined a Facebook group for women with curly hair in an effort to try and tame some of the frizz. Moments like those deepened my embarrassment for having a Jewfro. After ninth grade, I kept my hair mostly on the short side and made sure to get a haircut at the beginning of every month. Before embarking on a six-week summer program in Israel in 2013, I asked my parents to give me a buzzcut, since it was a trendy look among my friends at the time. Unfortunately, their attempt at shaving my hair with the incorrect set of clippers in my backyard led to the worst haircut I’ve ever received (sorry, Mom and Dad).

Floppier hair can be styled more easily than African-textured hair without the need for additional styling products. This will enable your fringe to fall gently to either side of your face. We know it’s a privilege that curly-haired women can straighten their hair to fit in or “pass,” while others cannot change their physical features. Straightening, coloring and updos can also be fun, and women should delight in the many options that we have.

CURLY HAIRCUT IDEA #1: layered bob

Judaism is actually an ethnoreligion – meaning we’re a people, a tribe, as well as a faith system. So although Jews are a hugely diverse group – both in terms of appearance and customs – there are some physical characteristics (such as the infamous ‘Jewish nose’) which some of us share. Other Jewish men choose to show total dedication to the rules and avoid hair removal altogether. Some men avoid razors and use electric shavers or scissors to trim their beards instead.

Easy-To-Do And Flattering Hairstyles For Curly Hair

Because of the shape, trimmed-back styles barely look like Jewfro hairstyles at all. Alternatively, you should try using women’s curl shampoo or styling products. Jewfro hairstyles can be quite unruly if they are not cared for properly.

But let’s make sure we are doing it because we want to, not because we are subconsciously internalizing derisive tropes about Jews. I see my kinks and curls as a link to my history and ancestors passed down through generations. My decision to wear my curls naturally contributes to creating a more diverse community, enhancing my cultural identity and not just wanting to blend in with everyone else. In recent years African-American women in particular have encouraged women to wear their hair naturally as a means of asserting their ethnic identity and refusal to conform to idealized Western standards of beauty. While this movement gains momentum, African-American women spend a staggering $50 million annually on chemical hair straighteners. But this isn’t about me judging anyone else’s hair, or that I don’t like curly hair.

If you’re wondering what these curls are and why Jewish men wear them, you’ve come to the right place! This article will look at why some Jewish people have coils on the sides of their heads and dive into some other Jewish hair traditions. Curly hair is a genetically inherited trait unrelated to ethnicity, culture, or faith. This distinctive hairstyle is a demonstration of religious devotion. Jewish people that marry Jewish people typically express the genetics for curly hair because the Jewish ethnicity has been prone to express the genes that code for curly hair.

This style works best if you have a small Jewfro hairstyle with tight curls. You will often find that the Jewfro and the Afro have some similarities in that they are both styled to make the best of a natural hair type. Both encourage the hair to embrace its inherent volume and to stand up and out from the scalp. We must embrace individuals sporting naturally curly hair or kippot or payot as acceptably groomed and professional — and the full range of Jewish ethnic, racial and denominational diversity as just that, Jewish. I never really noticed my curly hair until we moved back to Australia.

For example, facial hair that impedes eating and hair at the nape of the neck are allowed to be trimmed. Other passages permit Jewish men to shave their heads when they are in a period of mourning or after they have contact with a corpse. Jewish men were encouraged to follow strict gender norms and avoid traditionally feminine practices. Another theory behind the ban is that razors and shaving were considered pagan practices.

Curly hair, like many characteristics, is not a universal Jewish trait, nor particular to Jews, nor inherently unattractive. Sadly, our own community has subconsciously internalized some of these harmful tropes. This has resulted in self-criticism and shame, as well as a narrow and exclusionary understanding of what Jews look like. At a time when newsrooms are closing or cutting back, the Forward has removed its paywall. That means for the first time in our 126-year history, Forward journalism is free to everyone, everywhere. With an ongoing war, rising antisemitism, and a flood of disinformation that may affect the upcoming election, we believe that free and open access to Jewish journalism is imperative.

curly jewish hair

Other Jewish people may curl their payots because they have naturally straight hair. One of the best ways to even out the volume distribution of your curls is with a layered haircut, and it doesn’t get much more classic than the layered bob. Best of all, this haircut works with just about any type of curls, from loose waves to the tightest of spirals. Very tight curls will make a ‘fro look smaller and they mean that your ‘fro will seem to grow at a much slower rate.

Monochrome hair color will add intensity to a hairstyle like this one. We’ve found that the most comprehensive way of identifying curl pattern is to use the Texture Typing system, but I get that you feel your hair type isn’t included in the Texture Typing system. As time has passed, I’ve started to embrace the Jewfro look a bit more. I’ve realized that cutting my Jewfro was both flattening my hair into a more neutral appearance and erasing an important facet of my Jewish identity.

Talk about a hassle-free curly hairstyle—once your curls are clean and conditioned, air drying is all you need to do. An inverted bob haircut involves longer hair around the chin that transitions into shorter strands in the back. This sophisticated version of the bob haircut is easy to maintain and ideal for those with curly strands. Pay homage to 90’s boyband style by tinting the tips of your hair with a blonde or caramel hair color.

In other instances, my Jewfro became a source of actual physical agony. After it happened and my initial mortification subsided, I tried to laugh the whole thing off, thinking that the more important thing was to just have fun. But I couldn’t shake off how much her grabbing my hair hurt, how painful it was to have something so integral to my identity be violated for the sake of spectacle. Jewish or not, big, kinky and dark hair is something that has always been seen as an aesthetic accessory needing to be tamed in order to heed the societal standard of short, straight and light hair.

While many Orthodox men refrain from cutting their facial hair altogether, others will use scissors to trim their beards and mustaches for hygienic reasons. Although the practice has mostly been abandoned, some married Jewish women would shave their entire heads. While most women prefer to cover their hair, some Ultra-Orthodox women find shaving their head the surest way to make sure others never see their hair.

Modern Farmhouse Plans Modern Farmhouse Floor Plans & House Plans

modern farm house plans

Farmhouse style home plans have been around for many years, mostly in rural areas. However, due to their growing popularity, farmhouses are now more common even within city limits. This country stlye home is typically two-stories and has a wrap-around porch, family gathering areas, additional bedrooms on the upper level, formal front rooms and a country kitchen. This makes the modern farmhouse the ultimate solution to addressing the needs of your growing family. This two-story modern farmhouse shows off a classic charm with its horizontal lap siding, brick skirting, metal roof accent, and plenty of windows flooding the home with natural light. Board and batten siding, brick accents, varying gable peaks, and metal roofs give this modern farmhouse a great curb appeal.

A double hung window simply means that both the top and bottom sash are operable, so they can both move up and down or tilt. The windows should also be tall, to again accentuate the height of the home, and to let in more light. You may think a window is just a window, but the right style is key for crafting the right look. Perhaps the most recognizable characteristic of a Modern Farmhouse is the gable roof.

What Makes Us Unique

Upstairs, three family bedrooms reside along with a versatile loft and a spacious game room perfect for entertaining. A bonus room can be a playroom, an office, or anything else that you want it to be. If you want a home that can grow along with your family, make sure you look at houseplants with bonus rooms. A wide lot gives you access to things that wouldn’t be possible on a smaller lot.

Along with these essential characteristics, modern farmhouse plans also have several exterior, interior, and decorative key features. Whether you’re in the market for modern farmhouse 1-story house plans, one-and-a-half story, or two-story plans, we offer a wide range of floor plans conducive to your lifestyle, budget, and preference. So, for example, you can find a sprawling ranch with a traditional layout or a two-story home with an open floor plan—and vice versa.

The joy of modern farmhouse design should be found in making it purposeful, sophisticated, and modern. That said, if you’re limited with space, take a cue from small farmhouse interior design boards on Foter and keep imperfect decorative objects petite in scale as they’ll overpower a room and keep the eye distracted. It ushers you into an open floor plan that combines the great room, dining area, and kitchen. Cathedral and beamed ceilings add visual interest while sliding glass doors extend the living space onto a wonderful courtyard warmed by a fireplace. The kitchen is a chef’s dream boasting a massive pantry and tons of counter space including a center island with bar seating.

There’s a spirit of practicality and order that is softened by the balanced of character and comfort. It’s no wonder that this style has quickly become one of the most popular amongst home owners and home dreamers today. Check out our Modern Farmhouse decor Pinterest board for ideas and inspiration to help you achieve that perfect balance and make it your own. Hang a chalk board, put galvanized metal planters in your bedroom, create a pretty vignette on a tray for your coffee table. Decorate with the little details you love, but use a discerning eye to keep it uncluttered.

Keep an eye out for these fundamental elements and you’ll be on the right track. Bright optic white will work to highlight statement-making pieces while working as a modern farmhouse decor foundation to tie everything together. Plus, heavier farmhouse furnishings can make a small space appear even smaller and more cramped, while white walls will work to combat that along with plenty of mirrors and reflective surfaces. Take a cue from clean Scandinavian design and stick to neutral modern farmhouse design hues for soothing contrasts to a wild mix of decorative pieces. And to replicate the everyday appeal of modern farmhouse decor, go for matte finishes and low-shine materials for a sense of well-judged, yet casual cool everyday glamor. Board and batten siding, metal roofs, and light wood accents combine to give this 4-bedroom farmhouse a great curb appeal.

The chic style isn’t going anywhere anytime soon since it holds the quaint aesthetics of the classic farmhouse while tying in the flourishes of a modern home. Nevertheless, each one has the same key elements that tie back to functionality - big, open spaces, clean lines, and large porches. To own a Modern Farmhouse is to embrace the simplicity and charm of an older way of life, but incorporate current features and concepts to bring that traditional style into the present day.

For modern farmhouse living room decor, our interior designers often suggest bringing in rustic sconces and dramatic light fixtures as they’ll also work to pack a sophisticated punch in one of your most used rooms. In addition to the many classic and historical designs, California also includes many contemporary homes. These houses can vary noticeably in appearance, though many focus on simple exteriors incorporating a wide range of building materials. Available in both one-story and two-story layouts, these homes bring modern design elements into play by increasing the flow between rooms and incorporating numerous windows.

All of our plans are customizable so just let us know if you’d like to add on a garage, extra room, basement or ADU. As for furniture, you want to have a carefully curated mix of different pieces. Don’t just walk into a big name furniture outlet and buy a living room set, but instead source your pieces from a variety of stores, vintage shops and antique purveyors. Now I know I said you could do what you want, but a farmhouse sink is pretty much a requirement. But feel free to choose the material you want, whether it’s porcelain, stainless steel, copper or something else.

When building a Modern Farmhouse, you have to hit that perfect balance between too modern and too traditional. Double hung windows point back to old American farmhouses, but the updated patterns available now help bring the style into today. And there’s good reason why so many of our clients from Los Angeles to Brooklyn fall for modern farmhouse style.

Already an established trend for interiors, the move to integrate inside design with outside design using the same manufactured materials will continue, too. However, with a limited free version to use, there isn’t any excuse for not giving it a try. There are plenty of impressive examples designers have created using Gravit Designer that proves it can be very effective at some jobs. When we reviewed the top tool, we found it offered best-in-class color management, layer handling, and selection tools, with AI automating a raft of effects from cleaning up images to object removal. After reviewing the tool, we ultimately felt that from subject selection to object removal, Adobe’s Firefly and Sensei models offer impressive performance. And although the results aren't always perfect straight off the bat, especially with uncanny neural filters, the software still provides excellent value.

To test for the best digital art & drawing software we first set up an account with the relevant software platform, whether as a download or as an online service. We then tested the service by creating a handful of images to see how the software could be used for the editing and development of each image. The aim was to push each software platform to see how easy it was to use different features, tools, and filters where available. We assess overall user interface and experience, the breadth of tools and brushes on offer, and value for money.

Many schools also provide funding to graduate students through scholarships, grants and fellowships. Institutional accreditation means that a university has met minimum quality requirements related to its academics, financial management, faculty and staff, and student resources and services. To qualify for federal financial aid, you must attend an accredited college. If you’ve been following my Android-scented ramblings for long, you’ve probably heard me rave about the sheer awesomeness of an app called Panels before. For years now, I’ve been partial to a thoughtful and unconventional Android launcher called Niagara Launcher.

He started writing in 1986 and has contributed to MicroMart, PC Format, 3D World, among others. For more software ideas, we've also tested out the best free Adobe Illustrator vector alternatives. Additionally, a cut-down version called Xara Photo & Graphic Designer is available and again is frequently discounted.

This graphics application is also available as a one-time purchase to save money in the long run. We also looked at the cost, which means we also evaluated free graphic design software. If you want an easy, more affordable entrée into the world of vector graphics design, CorelDraw is worth a look. It also can serve professionals who want some of its special effects tools. And if you don't want to pay a subscription, Corel lets you buy to own for a one-time price. Use the FlexColorScheme package to access numerous premade designs and numerous advanced coloring features including customized tone mapping, optional surface blends, and several component sub-themes.

If you and your family love taking photographs of walks in the park, weekend road trips or vacations, this service is ideal for getting your photos in your hands ASAP. One thing to note about the subscription option is that there are only two sizes available (5" x 7" and the monthly mini). If you have a special project and a little more money to spend, Artifact Uprising offers Design Services, which allow you to work one-on-one with an expert to bring your special moments to life. Just note that the design fee is rather steep at $119 and requires an additional $100 album deposit. But with Panels, critically, you don’t have to be on your home screen to access that interface.

Affinity Photo 2 lacks some of Photoshop’s newer features, such as one-click object selection and AI asset generation. However, if you don’t need those tools and want to avoid an ongoing Adobe subscription, Affinity Photo 2 is a no-brainer. Looka is an AI-powered logo creator tool that lets you make and customize a professional-grade logo for your brand within minutes using only your web browser. After choosing your industry and aesthetic, Looka generates many high-quality logos, which can be further tailored to your specific tastes.

MyPaint works best when used with a graphics tablet, but you can also use it with any other input device, including touchscreens. Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator were pioneers in their respective fields of image editing and vector graphics. But when InDesign arrived on the scene in 1999, it was somewhat late to the party. The market for desktop publishing software at that time was dominated by QuarkXpress.

There’s also SketchUp Studio, which costs $1,199 a year and has even more advanced features, such as building energy analysis, HVAC sizing and thermal comfort analysis. If you have any questions about the software of home and interior design in general, you can post in the forum and expect an answer within a couple of hours. If you’re interested, we also have a ranking of the best architecture software. The interface really goes to town with skeumorphism, with a plastic palette of colors that splatter when you dip your virtual brush, showing which shade you’re currently using and making a pleasing splat. You can wash the bristles in a cup of water before picking a different color, or use one immediately after another to blend them together on the brush. As well as drawing apps for tablets, the desktop software is available as a full package or a Lite version, which is half the price but limited in comparison.

What to Expect on Disney Halloween Cruises

Rather, Disney Halloween cruises depart from several of the same ports as regular Disney Cruise Line sailings, including Port Canaveral and Miami in Florida, San Diego in California, and New York City. For those with more of a sweet tooth, there are plenty of themed treats to indulge in too! Some popular options from past Halloween on the High Seas cruises include the Jack Skellington Chocolate Mousse, the Mickey Mouse Halloween Cupcake, and the Haunted Mansion Cake Pop.

The following night, Disney characters like Mickey and Minnie donned costumes and posed for pictures with passengers at designated times. With a resurgence in the popularity of “Hocus Pocus” and its recent sequel, even the Sanderson sisters might get in on the act. Except this time, it’s Minnie Mouse, Daisy Duck and Clarabelle Cow playfully dressing up as the film franchise’s silly witches. Mickey’s Mouse-querade Party is where you’ll find other favorite onboard characters wearing fun costumes for Halloween. Our pumpkin tree on the Disney Magic was named “Reap.” Reap had big empty branches when we boarded the ship. The first night of the cruise, there was  a show in the atrium where the “caretaker” told  the tale of the trees.

Is there an Adult only Halloween Party onboard Halloween on the High Seas?

Other fun family activities during Halloween on the High Seas include pumpkin-carving, a ghostly takeover of Disney Cruise Line ship announcements, and much more. Guests will also enjoy special Halloween-themed food and beverage items during rotational dining and elsewhere in DCL restaurants. Each cruise will take families to fascinating destinations including the Bahamas, Caribbean, California, Bermuda, Canada, and Mexico. Adult-only Halloween fun can be had on a Halloween on the High Seas Cruise. So whether you’re a solo cruiser, a childless cruiser, or a parent needing a break, this is for you!

What Halloween Extras Can You Get to Make the Experience Special?

The only ship that doesn’t partake in the celebration is the Disney Wonder. This is because, during this time of the year, the ship is setting sail from different ports around Australia. And of course, no Disney Cruise is complete with a souvenir shirt to remember the occasion. While we have loads of Disney Cruise Shirts in the shop if you’re traveling for the spooky season, then why not grab our Halloween on the High Seas Shirt to ear on board and get into the mood? And we always recommend sizing up if you’re unsure, for a more relaxed look. You can also grab a Halloween on the High Seas Stateroom Door Magnet in this collection to match.

Each ship has its own scream-worthy setting especially for the season, including a unique Pumpkin Tree that serves as the centerpiece of the festivities. Plus, one night of your itinerary features Mickey’s Mouse-querade Party where you’ll get to meet more characters, bust a move during a dance party, trick-or-treat, and take in all the Halloween fun. Halloween on the High Seas returns to Disney Cruise Line with more sailings than ever before and new one-of-a-kind experiences in September and October 2023.

Are tickets required for Halloween events?

This is, however, your opportunity to meet Jack and Sally, which I know for many people is a big deal. So if you’re excited about that, the meet and greet with Jack and Sally is directly after the Sing and Scream. And with that being said, if it wasn’t held during the same time as the party, and had all of the original effects we had planned to see, we likely would have stayed all the way to the end.

Not all cruises have Pirate Night; but all of the ones we’ve been on have, even cruises that are not in the Caribbean. We sailed in the North Atlantic for our Halloween on the High Seas cruise and we still had a Pirates Night. Truthfully I was surprised by this since the event is literally called Pirates in the Caribbean, but I can’t complain because we love Pirate Night! You’ll be able to tell if your cruise includes Pirate Night when you receive your itinerary so that you can plan accordingly.

The Disney Wish, the newest Disney Cruise Line ship, will once again bring its unique twist on a Halloween on the High Seas hallmark. The centerpiece of every ship during Halloween sailings is the signature magical Pumpkin Tree towering over the atrium lobby, each with sprouting Jack-O-Lanterns and flickering lights. Halloween on the High Seas voyages will be offered aboard select Disney Cruise Line sailings aboard the Magic, Dream, Fantasy, and Wish ships. Departure dates occur from mid-September through October 2023, with a total of 39 different voyages. The sailings depart from ports in Miami and Port Canaveral, Florida plus San Diego, California and New York City, New York.

Over the course of the cruise, pumpkins begin to grow on the tree’s branches! Since our cruise was over the actual holiday, our pumpkin tree sprouted pumpkins at an accelerated rate so that the tree was in full bloom by Halloween day. Every fall, Disney Cruise Line gets into the holiday spirit with special Halloween on the High Seas voyages. To celebrate in style, passengers can book the one-of-a-kind suite in the ship's forward funnel. Equally as fun is seeing the many creative costumes donned by your fellow cruise guests.

Itineraries for the fall of 2024 have been announced and booking is currently open. Experience the return of Halloween on the High Seas sailings and Very Merrytime cruises. Additionally, indulge in the enchanting beauty of Lighthouse Point, Disney’s latest island destination in The Bahamas. Halloween on the High Seas sailings take place on every Disney Cruise Line ship. Halloween-themed cruise typically take place from mid-September until the ship’s sailing that includes October 31.

With the villains out of the way, it’s time for a comical (and highly competitive) costume party followed by music and dancing. Just like Disney Cruise Line isn’t only for families, you don’t need to be a kiddo to get into the spooky spirit during Halloween at the High Seas. On the night of Mickey’s Mouse-querade, the Disney Villains run amuck in the adults-only part of the ship during a ghoulishly grown-up Halloween party. From creepy cooking demonstrations to arts & crafts to terrifying trivia, there’s something spooky to do for everyone. Little cruisers can even enjoy extra-special Halloween arts and crafts activities especially for them, such as face painting and pumpkin carving. Those dressing up like or who share a costume with a particular character definitely won’t want to give these meet-and-greets a miss.

Merrytime cruises typically start in mid-November and end with the last sailing of each ship that includes December 25. If you’re on a New Year’s Eve cruise, the Christmas decor will still be up, but it won’t have the Merrytime designation. You can verify that you’re booking a Merrytime cruise by looking for the ornament and light illustrated banner on the listing for your sailing.

(See our Very Merrytime Christmas Cruise Review.) Perhaps that was simply a matter of unrealistic expectations–something we probably don’t have to as great of a degree when it comes to Halloween. The atrium in each Disney Cruise Line ship will come alive with ghoulish games, trick-or-treating, and dancing, plus the famous Disney characters in their Halloween costumes. Disney Cruise Line in the fall of 2024 will once again be all about fun and celebration!

The truth is, no matter how many trips we take or how much research we do, things can change quickly and even from sailing to sailing. We always recommend that you decorate your door when you cruise. Not only does it add a little extra magic to an otherwise boring stateroom door, but it will also help you find your door in the long corridors of the cruise ship. We have a Disney Halloween on the High Seas Cruise Magnet we like to add to the decor with our family name and destination. Gift shops are only open on board when the ship is at sea, so I highly recommend purchasing any special merch you want at the earliest possible time. They won’t be receiving a new shipment of merchandise during your cruise, so if something sells out while you’re on board, you likely won’t be able to get it at a later time.

This is typically the time cruises are less booked and you can find a cheaper price. A Disney cruise is amazing any time of year, but especially during spooky season. If you’re a fan of Halloween, Disney, and cruising, then you’ll likely find that Halloween on the High Seas is worth the extra cost for you and your family. You’ll find no shortage of photo opportunities on a Disney cruise. And with everyone all dressed up for Halloween with nowhere to go except around the ship, it’s the perfect time to strike a pose. For the ultimate spine-chilling experience, consider decorating inside your room, too. If you don’t mind having to set it up, BYOD (bring your own decorations) and save some cash. Or, splurge and arrange to have Disney decorate your room for you.

Planning Guides

Ready to set sail on the high seas during the spookiest time of the year? And cruising during a Halloween on the High Seas cruise has been one of our all-time favorite vacations to date. So we’ve compiled a guide perfect for helping you plan and knowing what to expect during a Halloween on the High Seas Cruise with the Disney Cruise Line. Ultimately, Halloween on the High Seas sounds like a lot of fun, and we’re glad to see Disney Cruise Line bringing it back for 2022. It’s already shaping up to be a pricey return to cruising for us with the Disney Wish launching, so maybe we’ll take a rain check until Halloween on the High Seas 2023. We’re also keeping our excitement and expectations in check, as we previously did one of DCL’s Christmas cruises, and it was a bit underwhelming.

Disney Cruise Ships With Halloween on the High Seas

In recent years Disney Cruise Line has gotten creative with the character costumes garnishing some much-deserved attention. In 2022, it was announced that Minnie, Daisy, and Clarabelle were going to dress in costume as the three Sanderson Sisters from the Disney cult classic, Hocus Pocus. This created so much buzz that the trio was also introduced to land lovers at Disneyland’s Oogie Boogie Bash. The lines for characters are usually not terribly long, but we recommend getting there close to the start time as Cast Members will “close” the line when the character’s time slot is almost over. The Sanderson Sisters line gets very long, so we recommend arriving early. They will close this line once it appears to be at the minute mark.

halloween disney cruise

Other decor on the ship includes many Jack O’Lantern porthole windows in the public areas. We were in line for formal night pictures before dinner when I happened to catch this picture of the sun setting over the ocean. In 2020, Halloween on the High Seas has been canceled due to all Disney cruises being suspended through at least December 6. Stateroom doors are metal, so we recommend using magnets to create your décor. DIY your own or buy some premade off of Etsy – go for a Halloween theme or a general Disney design.

Halloween on the High Seas Activities

When you step onto the ship, you’ll find Halloween decorations in a variety of spots, like jack-o-lantern stickers on portholes and pumpkin garlands around the atrium. If you are on a Halloween cruise but not sailing on 10/31, your cruise will have a certain day when these activities take place. There were two different parties and trick or treat times to choose from. We attended one and felt like we saw the show, got the candy, we were good.

Halloween Activities

We break down park crowds, park hours of operation, ticket prices, and average temperature. We also break down the best time to visit Disney World based on specific times of the year and special events. Almost every ship in the Disney fleet has a Halloween on the High Seas itinerary.

Of course, each ship and itinerary may feature its own kind of fun, but the basics of this special cruise remain the same no matter where you are sailing. Regardless of the time of year, Pirate Night is offered once on each sailing of every Disney ship. On short sailings, Pirate Night is often held on the same night as the main Halloween soiree. That means anyone who wants to participate in both either has to bring two costumes and do a wardrobe change or simply go as a pirate for Halloween.

Which Disney ships offer Halloween on the High Seas?

With a tiny handful of exceptions, all the holiday perks are included with the price of your cruise. Prices related more to the date of the sailings rather than the holiday overlay. For example, sailings during the first two weeks of December include all the Christmas decor, music, food, and more, but the prices are very reasonable. Rates go up as more children have their holiday school vacations and the cruises that actually include Christmas can be quite pricey.

From our perspective, the Very Merrytime Christmas Cruise would’ve been better with a holiday-themed deck party, substantive stage show, daytime entertainment, themed menus & desserts, scavenger hunt, and more decorations. It doesn’t sound like Halloween on the High Seas has any of this, either. Aboard the Disney Wish, guests will witness the debut of an all-new Pumpkin Tree in the “Cinderella”-inspired Grand Hall.

This post shares all of the news, plus quick thoughts from Sarah’s experience during last year’s DCL spook season event. Kurt is a former Disneyland Cast Member and seasoned explorer and is your trusted guide to the world of theme park travel. If he isn’t found trying the newest treats in Disneyland, Kurt enjoys relaxing at home with his dog Sam and playing video games with friends in his free time. It is tradition to decorate your stateroom door for any Disney Cruise.

Or perhaps you can’t celebrate Halloween without watching the latest frightful flick? That said, for these more popular characters, you may want to jump in line early or risk missing out if the line gets cut. With the introduction of the Disney Wish, this quartet of terrifying trees also got a sister.

Mickey’s Mouse-querade was probably our favorite event of the entire Halloween on the High Seas cruise. A dance party with all of our favorite characters dressed in full Halloween attire, trick or treating, festive character meet and greets, and games, this party is fun for all ages. Trick or Treat bags are left in guests staterooms the day of the party so no need to worry about bringing your own. Although generally specialty cruises can be a little more expensive, Halloween on the High Seas Cruises are often during hurricane season and that can help you snag a great deal. Also, some of the itineraries and ships that tend to be a little less popular are less expensive. When we cruised from New York City to Maine and Canada, our 5-night cruise was actually about the same price as our 3 night Very Merrytime in the Caribbean.
